Ricky Hatton says vs Pacquiao He Will, "Attack, Attack And Attack Again,"

Ever since the fight was announced, was then in doubt and was then back on for good, the fans have been talking about the May 2nd battle between 140-pound stars Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao as being just that, a battle. The paying public, the majority of them anyway, are expecting a real, hard war in Las Vegas, and judging by what Ring magazine light-welterweight champ Hatton had to say to Sky Sports recently, the fight will indeed be fought in a way that will make it an affair to carry an adults-only certificate..

For though he says there will be plenty of speed on his part and not just power, Hatton has laid out his-game-plan for the big fight, and he says he plans to be ultra-aggressive against the Filipino southpaw dynamo.

"Attack, attack and attack again," was "The Hitman's" answer when he was asked how he will approach the May fight. "If you beat the pound-for-pound number one that is a statement. We are both very aggressive and both like to go forward but ultimately my size and power will be a factor. But it's not just a power thing, I'm working on my speed. I think they [Team-Pacquiao] see me as a slow fighter and they will get a shock on the night [at] just how fast I am."

With Pacquiao also likely to come out fast and aggressive at the first bell, the fight cannot fail to be fan-friendly. However, Ricky has a feeling Manny may try to out-box him as he did Oscar De La Hoya back in December of last year - as he explained.

"I'll be keeping the same ferocity I've always had and when he feels my strength I don't think Manny will stand about," Hatton said. "I think he will think he can out-box me like he did Oscar De La Hoya. He might come and have a go early on but with the greatest respect I don't think it would have been hard to out-box Oscar that night.

"If Manny thinks he can do the same to me I think he will come unstuck."

Hatton clearly goes along with all those who feel Pacquiao had nothing too formidable in front of him last December, when the formerly great "Golden Boy" was both old and very weak at the weight. This, as Hatton says, will not be the case with him on May 2nd. So far, the 30-year-old Manchester man has been delighted with the way his training has gone.

"We are only half way through training camp, and I think a lot of fighters would be happy with my speed, sharpness and timing come fight night," Ricky said. "I'm happy with the stage I am at but I just know my boxing ability, combination punches, jabbing and head movement is going to get so much better. I have a nice balance now and the fight can't come quick enough."

In what is likely to be a fight of the year candidate, Hatton Vs. Pacquaio - "The Hitman" Vs. "Pac-Man" - sure can't come quick enough!

Pacquiao knocked down his sparring partner first day!

Los Angeles, California -- DARN, IT’S ONLY THR FIRST DAY!

At the rate things have started at the Wildcard Gym, Freddie Roach, the famed guru at the gym may have a hard time finding more sparring partners for Manny Pacquiao.

And what happened today, the very first day of sparring, may serve as a warning to Ricky Hatton and his loudmouth trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.

The message to them is: Quit talking and start training, because Pacquiao is on a war path.

Pacquiao today more than ever showed that he means business and is treating his fight with Hatton with extra determination.

Pacquiao knocked down his sparring partner, a pretty respectable boxer from Glendale, California, Art Hovhannesyan in the second round.

Then disaster struck!

Hovanessian was cut on the upper eyelid (a cut the ringside experts describes as about one inch) by a single left hook resulting in the immediate stoppage of the sparring.

And the guy was fully equipped with a head gear with a face mask!

Could you imagine if he wasn’t?

Hatton predicts 6th to 10th round KO vs Pacquiao

International Boxing Organization (IBO) Junior Welterweight Champion Ricky Hatton is confident he will knockout Manny Pacquiao at least midway into their 12-round title fight in Las Vegas on May 2.

Hatton predicts a knockout between the 6th and 10th rounds. He said he is in top form to beat the best pound-for-pound fighter today.

Both Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach and Top Rank Promotions boss Bob Arum similarly pronounced earlier the May 2 boxing showdown will not go the distance.

Hatton is now on rigid training in Manchester under the watchful eye and supervision of Floyd Mayweather, Sr..

He is not on strict diet, although he admits, he still needs to lose more pounds.

Hatton is excited on their new game plan, which he calls “controlled aggression” to match the hand speed and fast footwork of Pacquiao.

"We're both very aggressive fighters. I'll have to go for the knockout so," Hatton said. "I mean, you can never say never. I mean, the main thing is, I'm sure Manny would say the same, is that we win."

Meanwhile, Mayweather, Sr. celebrated his 56th birthday in Bristol, where a non-title boxing card was also presented by Hatton Promotions.

Win or lose, Hatton wishes to visit the Philippines and is open to do a commercial project with Pacquiao.

Hatton was amazed how Filipino boxing fans glorified Pacquiao especially during their previous UK promo tour.

"The people are wonderful, very, very nice people. When we had a press conference in London and Manchester lots of Filipino people turned up and they were very nice, very, very polite, very proud of their fighter,” he said.

He added: “Yeah, of course, I mean I've heard good things about the Filipino people. the brief encounter I've had with them is everything that people have said is true, they're very nice people.”

Hatton did not forget to greet his Filipino fans, too.

"Mabuhay kapamilya, maraming salamat," said Hatton.

Hatton is set to leave for the United States on April after watching the boxing match of his younger brother, Matthew, on March 28 in Altrincham, England.

Andrew Martin aka TEST was found dead at the age of 33 in his Tampa Bay apartment on March 13 2009. The cause of death has not been determined; however, police believe that foul play was not a factor. Police were called in after a neighbor reported Martin appearing motionless for several hours, with Martin being seen through a window outside of his apartment. Andrew would have been 34 years of age this Tuesday.

Amir Khan wins a Cut over Marco Antonio Barrera

In a WBO lightweight eliminator, 2004 Olympic silver medalist Amir Khan (20-1, 15 KOs) won a five round technical decision over legendary “Baby Faced Assassin” and former three-division world champion Marco Antonio Barrera (65-7, 42 KOs) on Saturday night at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England. In round one, Barrera suffered a deep gash on the hairline from an unintentional headbutt that bled into his left eye from that point on. Khan was faster and very sharp, often punishing the bloodied Barrera on the ropes. Barrera had some moments too, but Khan was in command for the rounds contested. Doctors looked at the cut in the fourth, but the bout was not stopped at that point (which would have resulted in a no decision). The bout was stopped because of the cut during the following round, sending the verdict to the scorecards, which read 50-44, 50-45, 50-45 for Khan.

———-
In a clash for the vacant interim version of the WBO cruiserweight title, the Cinderella story of Ola “Kryptonite” Afolabi (14-1-3, 6 KOs) continued with a shocking ninth round knockout of former champion Enzo Maccarinelli (29-3, 22 KOs). A big right hand ended it at 1:50.
———-
Unbeaten Roman “Rocky” Martinez (22-0-1, 13 KOs) scored an impressive fourth round KO to dethrone defending WBO super featherweight champion Nicky “Cookie” Cook (29-2, 16 KOs) claiming the 130lb world title. Two left uppercuts in the fourth led to the first knockdown. Cook barely beat the count but Martinez finished him off with a left hook. Cook stood up on shaky legs and referee Dave Parris waved it off. Time was 2:20.
———-
Challenger Matthew Hall (22-1, 15 KOs) destroyed Commonwealth light middleweight champion Bradley Pryce (27-7, 17 KOs) in two explosive rounds. Hall put Pryce on the canvas three times in round two and the fight was waved off right after the third knockdown with Pryce down and out.

James Kirkland systematically broke down Joel Julio

Headlining a fast and furious Boxing After Dark card tonight at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, James Kirkland systematically broke down Joel Julio in their junior middleweight battle of wills, forcing the referee to step in and wave off the contest directly after the closing bell of the sixth round. It was a convincing, brutal victory for Kirkland, and yet it was no one-sided affair, not by a long shot. In fact, Julio, who suffered a badly cut and swollen right eye, must be wondering right now in his bruised and beaten thoughts what exactly it would take to beat James Kirkland right now, because he hit him with all manner of chin-snapping bombs across the six rounds of their fight tonight, the type of clean, accurate power shots that generally bring mere mortals to their knees.

Jackson beats Jardine in UFC 96

COLUMBUS, OH, March 7 – Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson didn’t get any easy road to his 30th pro win, but after a hard-fought three round unanimous decision win over Keith Jardine in the UFC 96 main event at the Nationwide Arena Saturday night, he not only got the victory, he cleared the way for a shot at the new champ, Rashad Evans.

“I needed these three rounds,” said Jackson, now 30-7. “There was a lot of pressure on me to fight Keith Jardine. I didn’t think the pressure would get to me. But he’s a tough guy. I didn’t expect him to be that tough.”

Scores were 29-28 twice and 30-27 for Jackson.

Pacquiao: Two more fights after Hatton, then I'll retire

After his upcoming May 2 clash with British superstar Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton, the People's Champion Manny Pacquiao said he will have one or two more fights before calling it quits.

The Pinoy boxing icon said his stellar professional career in boxing means he has nothing more to prove.

"Antagal ko na sa boxing eh, 18 years na... magna-19 years na ko sa boxing," Pacquiao said.

It has been a colorful career for Pacquiao, who set a record in becoming the first Asian to win four titles in four different divisions. He has also defeated some of the biggest names in boxing, including Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, and Oscar de la Hoya.

Two more fights after Hatton then he will hang his gloves, said Pacquiao.

“Hihintayin pa ba nating magkaroon tayo ng karamdaman bago magretiro?” said the 30-year-old General Santos native.

Pacquiao, who is currently in the United Kingdom to promote his match with Hatton in Las Vegas, said he wants to devote more time to his family.

Success, he said, is meaningless if he will not be with his four children during their formative years.

"Two months, two months lang ako sa tatlong laban, e ‘di six months na 'yun,” said Pacquiao. “Buti kung two months-two months lang akong nawawala sa bahay. Pero usually, six months-seven months akong nasa America. Mas madami akong time kesa sa pamilya ko.”

There are also talks that he will again try entering politics.

On the other hand, Hatton evaded questions of possible retirement should he lose to Pacquiao.

The two boxing superstars were together again in a news conference at the Imperial War Museum in Central London.

It was part of their UK press tour to promote the forthcoming fight dubbed as "The Battle of the East and West."

The two fighters played a game of darts during their first encounter in Manchester, two hours after their public appearance at the Trafford Center.

The darts challenge was held in the historic New Inn Club, one of the oldest English pubs in Manchester formerly owned by the Hatton family.

Meanwhile, part of Pacquiao's schedule was a courtesy call with Ambassador Edgardo Espiritu at the Philippine Embassy in London.

Filipino fans waited for hours outside the embassy.

Most of them did not report for work just to get a glimpse of the Filipino boxing icon, considered today as the best pound-for-pound fighter.

In the other title fight former WBC light flyweight champion Brian Viloria battles current IBF champion Ulises Solis of Mexico in the blockbuster card to be telecast by Solar Sports.

Ricky Hatton "In great shape"

by James Slater - There is still well over two months to go until fight time, but Ring magazine light-welterweight champion Ricky Hatton is already, in the words of his assistant trainer Lee Beard, "in great shape" for his hugely intriguing May 2nd battle with Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao. Training for the biggest fight of his life, and for his second chance to topple a fighter currently seen as the best pound-for-pound in the world, the 30-year-old Manchester warrior is leaving nothing at all to chance.

Hatton, well known for ballooning up in weight between fights, has done no such thing on this occasion - indeed, "Ricky Fatton" has been nowhere to be seen. Hatton knows he is in for a rough and unimaginably tough war with the great Manny Pacquiao, and he has more or less left the beers and the junk food alone since his fine win over Paulie Malignaggi last November.

Speaking to inside sports. ph, Beard said he has not yet had his fighter's weight checked, but that due to the shortness in time that has passed since the win over Malignaggi there's not been time for Hatton to put on a ton of excess poundage, and that presently Hatton's body looks good.

Beard said they will weigh Ricky this coming Friday, but that he looks pretty solid and ripped right now anyway.

"Ho took his shirt off, and his six-pack abs are there already," Beard said. "He's in really good shape and his fitness is very, very good too."

This is a very good sign for Hatton fans. With less time needed to rid himself of excess fat and weight, "The Hitman" can use his time in camp to work on his game-plan and his overall tactics for the May shootout. And Beard says there will be lots of hard sparring for his man when he gets to Las Vegas.

"Once we get to Vegas that's when all his hard sparring will start," Beard confirmed. "There's nobody in England that can get anywhere near to what Manny does so it's a bit of a lost cause [sparring in the UK]. We will get sparring partners who can emulate the speed [of Pacquiao] and things but in the end it's the level of experience and the level that Manny's at as the best fighter in the world. You are not going to get anyone like that."

In going to America, Beard, said, there will be "a lot more options" for who to work with in sparring. And once again lightweight puncher Edwin Valero's name has come up. It will be the unbeaten banger who will be sought out for main sparring partner duties.

"Valero doesn't fight like Manny, but he's got similarities in other ways," Beard said.

And although there are doubts as to whether or not Valero's services will be available, the KO-artist is definitely being considered.

As Beard explained:

"We would have to get somebody with the hand-speed of Manny and someone who could bang because Manny is not just fast, he's very heavy-handed too."

With Hatton's early preparations going well, he and Manny will be headed to Manchester and London for the pre-fight publicity tour this weekend. Then it will be back to hard training for the two exciting warriors.

"Fans are very interested to see how Khan has improved since he started working with trainer Freddy Roach as well as what future Hall of Famer Barrera has left. Maccarinelli vs. Afolabi and Cook vs. Martinez shape-up as two very fan-friendly bouts, too, and either could be main events.”

Khan vs. Barrera possibly a title fight

Unified lightweight champion Nate Campbell’s inability to make weight has led to three titles becoming vacant. As previously reported, Golden Boy has expressed interest in having the WBO sanction the February 28 fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz. Also in the mix for that belt is the March 14 clash between Amir Khan and Marco Antonio Barreral. Promoter Frank Warren told the Sun, “Khan vs. Barrera might well become a title fight. I hope the WBO will sanction it.”

Juan Manuel Marquez vs Juan Diaz

In 2008, Mexican icon Juan Manuel Marquez solidified his place among boxing's elite and became Mexico's number one fighter by knocking out Joel Casamayor and winning a championship in a third weight class. As 2009 opens, Marquez will not be resting on his laurels, as he accepted the challenge to face former three-time lightweight champion Juan "The Baby Bull" Diaz on Saturday, February 28th in what promises to be an early Fight of The Year candidate..

"This fight between Marquez and Diaz will shake the lightweight division to its core and truly determine the best 135-pounder in the world," said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. "As a fan, I can't wait to see this fight."

Marquez vs. Diaz, a 12 round bout for the Ring Magazine World Lightweight Championship, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and will be televised live on HBO's World Championship Boxing beginning at 10 pm ET / 7 pm PT.

Mexico's premier fighter and a future Hall of Famer, Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez (49-4-1, 36 KO's) has signified excellence for over 15 years and in three weight classes. A world champion at featherweight and junior lightweight, the 35-year-old Mexico City native made an immediate impact at 135 pounds when he won the Ring Magazine World Lightweight Championship by becoming the first man to stop Cuban great Joel Casamayor on September 13, 2008.

"Juan Diaz is a talented young fighter with a bright future," said Marquez. "But this is still my time and I am not about to let Diaz take my belt away from me."

Just nine years old when Marquez made his pro debut, 25-year old Juan Diaz (34-1, 17 KO's) has roared through the pro ranks during his eight-year career and built a stellar reputation as one of the fight game's most exciting young stars. The Former Three-Time World Lightweight Champion defended his crown seven times, beating the likes of fellow World Champions Acelino Freitas and Julio Diaz along the way. In his last bout in September of 2008, "The Baby Bull" thrilled his hometown fans at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas with a dominant 12 round decision win over Australian warrior Michael Katsidis.

"Juan Manuel is one of the greats in the game and it's an honor to fight him, but I will be victorious on February 28th," said Diaz.

Manny PACQUIAO vs Ricky HATTON is On!

Golden Boy Promotions formally announced the date that many suspected all along: Manny Paquiao will fight Ricky Hatton, for Hatton's junior welterweight title, on May 2, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

"We are very excited that this fight has been made, as it is the fight fans wanted and the one I look forward to seeing myself," said Oscar de la Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions. "This fight has all the makings of a "Fight of the Year" candidate and I think Hatton will de-throne Pacquiao and become boxing's pound-for-pound king."

Interesting that Oscar is picking Hatton. I wonder why?

"I always like new challenges which is the reason I am anxious to fight Ricky Hatton," said Pacquiao. "My trainer Freddie Roach will put together a new game plan which will be much different than the one we used against Oscar (De la Hoya). There are concerns because Hatton is a very strong puncher so I must deal with that in the ring. I promise I will be completely prepared and will do my best for all of my fans in The Philippines."

Here is the release:

LAS VEGAS, (January 28, 2009) - Two of boxing's biggest stars will meet in the ring in what could be the year's biggest pay-per-view event. Five-division world champion MANNY "Pac Man" PACQUIAO and Ring Magazine and IBO World Junior Welterweight champion RICKY "The Hitman" HATTON will fight for Hatton's World Junior Welterweight Championships Saturday, May 2 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao and Hatton boast a combined record of 93-4-2 (68 KOs), a winning percentage of 94% and a victory by knockout ratio of 73%.
